The largest Opposition party to contest the May 11 General and Regional Elections has accused the ruling party of fielding a “Friends and Family List” of candidates.
On Tuesday, some seven political parties submitted their lists at City Hall during what is known as Nomination Day.
There were immediate criticisms over the number of close family members and state company executives that appeared.
A Partnership for National Unity+The Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) said it is calling attention to the “shameless nepotism” evident on the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP’s) list of candidates.
“There are more than a dozen close relatives of current and former senior PPP officials on the list. This is a clear example of what APNU and the AFC have said time and time again – that the PPP has degenerated from a working class party to a small cabal of family and friends.
The PPP’s ‘Friends and Family List’ confirms the party’s shameless, blatant and unbridled nepotism which the PPP continues to throw in the faces of the people of this nation.”
The coalition said that the PPP is effectively admitting to the nation that the small cabal at Freedom House sees this nation as its personal possession not only to do as the members please but also to hand down and apportion to their heirs and progeny.
Among some of notables the coalition listed were Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, and his daughter, Rima Rohee; Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon and his daughter, Dr. Thandi Luncheon; former Minister Indranie Chandarpal and her son Rabindranauth Chandarpal;
Presidential Advisor, Gail Teixeira and her daughter Colleen Teixeira-Khan; President Donald Ramotar and his son Alexei Ramotar; Sports Minister, Frank Anthony and his wife, Shanti Singh-Anthony and Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn, and his sister Vanessa Benn.
In addition, the sons of Charles Ramson Sr. and Harripersaud Nokta- Charles Ramson Jr. and Shyam Nokta- are also there.
“APNU+AFC calls on all Guyanese to reject the nepotistic PPP regime and vote for change on May 11. APNU+AFC has presented a diverse, credible and qualified list of candidates based on meritocracy and consensus. The coalition has received the support of the majority of Guyanese and invites those who have not yet made up their minds to join the Unity Train to victory on May 11.”
