The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Computer Operations Manager for Software, Nigel Carter, yesterday introduced members of the NIS Board and the media to the prototype for a website, designed to allow persons to check their contributions.
The demonstration took place in the Patrick Martinborough Multi-Purpose Complex Board Room, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown yesterday.
Once approved by Board Members, insured persons will only be one click away from checking and tracking the history of their contributions to the Scheme on their computers. Each person will be allowed to create an account on the website, and will have individual passwords.
This prospective system would allow insured persons to contact NIS if they discover any error/inaccuracy with their information. It was described as a web interface which connects to an offline version of the database used by the NIS and prints contribution details.
NIS General Manager, Doreen Nelson explained that the idea behind this new electronic system was to reduce the number of people who are normally forced to join long lines at NIS offices countrywide, just to get an update on the status of their contributions.
“… We are now trying to implement an electronic system, so instead of having people come in, they can find out for themselves online.” This, Nelson said, would make the organisation’s job much easier, since they now have over 120,000 insured persons on screen.
Once the page is up and running, insured persons can visit the website by typing contributions.nis.org.gy into any search engine and selecting the “Create New Account” link. The insured person will then have to complete and submit a registration form online, which the NIS webmaster will review.
Once he is satisfied that it is in fact the individual, the user account will be approved.
The onus is then on the webmaster to send an email with login details to the user. The user will then be required to use the new password, thereby permitting them to log in and access their contribution records by selecting the “Check NIS Contributions” link.
Carter compared the simple and easy nature of accessing and learning the website to that of Facebook or “any other social media”. The user will also be able to check their bio data by selecting the respective option in the Contribution Information screen.
The system was said to be an in-house design, as it was created and designed by the NIS Information Technology department. “It was designed on an existing framework….separate from NIS database, just to prevent any malicious movement”, Carter stated.
According to information presented, the online system was built on an existing and secure framework which powers hundreds of thousands of sites.
The Computer Operations Manager of Software assured the board members that proper security measures were implemented to protect the website from cyber-attacks.
“We tried to take security into consideration, so we try to ensure that our database is kept out of harm’s way…” as part of the presentation, Carter related that the data used to service online requests will be extracted from the organisation’s live NIMS (National Institute for Materials Science) database, and displayed in a read only format.”
In his presentation, Carter related that in terms of access control, “no user will be allowed to view the contributions of another.” This is the case since, as long as a National Insurance number has been assigned to an account, no other account can be used to gain access to its information.
He noted that the website will not be limited to the checking of contributions. He explained that since it is in its initial stage, much more work is to be done to ensure that it expands and can serve other functions to users.
He added that the IT department envisions that there will be an application (app) that can be downloaded on smart phones, so that insured persons can check their status from their mobile devices’ rather than using a computer.
