Rising Sun Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Club attended the Guyana leg of the Classic of Classics
Martial Arts tournament that was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Easter Sunday and competed in the submission grappling category where they turned in an excellent performance. Although invited to participate on short notice, the core team also missing a few “big
guns” coupled with the fact that Guyana was required to put up some strong resistance against a foreign invasion from Trinidad and some other Caribbean islands, Guyana’s flagship Judo club, Rising Sun Judo and Jiu-Jitsu (club) still managed to dominate the grappling category
at the Classic of Classics Martial Arts Tournament held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Easter Sunday.
The unavailability of local powerhouses such as Paulo Melo and Carlos Rodrigues did not seem to fluster Sensei Bruce Fraser as his charges; 2014 Inter-Guiana Judo silver medalist Stephan Barry, up and coming sensation Ryan Soares and the slick Corwin D’Anjou spearheaded an onslaught that totally set them aside from all the rest…as the athletes of Rising Sun showed
why they are the best grapplers in Guyana.
D’Anjou dominated all his fights winning all by submission, cleaning up the lightweight division
and as predicted Barry met the dangerous Soares in the final heavyweight showdown and claimed victory via a last minute arm lock.
Monique Fotso claimed the ladies open title over 2014 Inter-Guiana silver medallist Khadija Ba. There were also memorable performances by Paul Ignatious, Ricardo Molina, Kwanza Thompson and Prince out of Trinidad and Tobago.
