Watchdog body, the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB), is planning to conduct a limited test on the Revised List of Electors, amidst concerns over a significant increase in the number of voters.
According to the EAB yesterday, its Council of Management has finalized arrangements for the commencement of its 2015 Elections Monitoring and Observation Exercise.
Since the 2011 elections, the list has grown 75,000 with concerns expressed over the accuracy.
However, the body said that due to the shortness of time and limited resources, its programme for the upcoming national and regional elections will be restricted to conducting a limited test of the Revised List of Electors (RLE) and observing the balloting process on Elections Day, 11th May 2015.
Dmitri Nicholson has been appointed Project Director for EAB’s 2015 programme.
Nicholson, EAB disclosed, has considerable experience working in the non-governmental organization sector in Guyana, especially in youth development.
Former EAB Project Directors, Clairmont Lye and Lawrence Lachmansingh, are also back.
They have “volunteered their time and resources to coordinate the implementation of the list test,” a statement from the body said.
Troy Thomas, a professional statistician, has agreed to provide pro bono support.
“Given the limited time available, EAB will need the support of the two main contesting groups, and GECOM, for this test to be done quickly and with quality. The EAB wishes to take this opportunity to invite persons, who are committed to strengthening democracy, to volunteer to join the EAB’s 2015 elections observer exercise. Civic-minded Guyanese, 18 years and older, who are neither activists nor candidates for any political party are invited to become impartial, objective observers in polling stations at which they are registered to vote.”
The current Council of Management comprises Father Malcolm Rodrigues (Chair), Dmitri Nicholson (Project Director), Teni Housty, Lyndell Danzie-Black, Father Godfrey Veerasammy, Slydell Glen and David Yhann.
