Jebon Crawford of The Trojan Cycle Club was in winner’s row when he out sprinted club mates Andrew ‘Padlock’ Green and Brian Harris to take top honours when the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) last Sunday held a 40-mile cycle race in Berbice.
The event was organised by coach Randolph Roberts and sponsored by a number of entities in Berbice including Hand In Hand Insurance Company, Berbice River Bridge, Visual and Sons Enterprise of Crabwood Creek, Raymond and Nazeela of West Berbice, Mara and Sons of New Amsterdam, Froze Grocery and Tahal and Sons Construction among others.
The race got on the way at 09:30hrs with the riders being sent on the way from in front of the Benjamin Sports Store at Fyrish Corentyne before proceeding to No 43 Bridge before turning back to finish at its point of origin.
A tight bunch stuck together for about 10 miles into the race when the three riders in Crawford, Green and Harris made a break to the front and were never caught.
It was a straight battle between the three riders as they swallowed up all the spring prizes. Crawford winning time was 1h: 58 seconds. In second position was Green, while Harris finished third. The second bunch was so much out of the race they finishing a considerable distance behind.
The sprint home for fourth among the chasing pack saw a number of veterans in contention with Wilbert Benjamin copping fourth, Syborne Fernandes fifth and Wasim Hassnu sixth.
In the beginners category David Sampson rode home first.
Among the veterans Benjamin, Fernandez and Hassnu finished in the top three positions.
The sprint point prizes were taken by Crawford and Green three each, while Harris copped two.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, organizer and coach of the FACC Randolph Roberts stated that the race was used as a warm up for the Berbice cyclists who are preparing for the annual Independence three stage cycle race set for May.
