Dear Editor,
On Thursday, April 2, 2015, Dr. Luncheon once again spouted his concern about ex-army officers who are joining APNU. In brief, his primary concern is that Brigadier Granger and several other army officers are now entering into the political arena. Many of us would agree that Dr. Luncheon’s observation is nothing new.
However, no one is surprised by his conclusions because they are utter nonsense. We want to make this very clear that army officers have served Guyana with distinction in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and when they leave the organization it is entirely up to us to determine what we do with the rest of our lives. We have made our own assessment as well. Some of our comments on this matter are as follows:
Firstly, In Guyana, the retirement age is 55 years so when one retires at such a young age that should not be the end of his/her life or their only contribution to society. Many of these officers are physically fit, very experienced, and very skilled and therefore have the ability to choose a new career. However, the vindictiveness of the PPP regime, both in terms of their blatant racist policies and their marginalization of a certain ethnic group have left the officers with no choice but to support change.
Secondly, the officers who gravitate to APNU may be giving Dr. Luncheon and the PPP nightmares. Army officers are first and foremost patriots and are generally prepared to live modestly rather than to sell their souls to a corrupt and godless regime. If people like Khemraj Ramjattan, Moses Nagamotoo, and Ralph Ramkarran have tried to change the culture of the PPP and failed, why should army officers who are politically inclined jump into that cesspool of filth.
Thirdly, army officers are generally competent hardworking people who believe in meritocracy and not nepotism or cronyism. They have looked at the PPP and recognized that Dr. Luncheon is a shameless man, who, in spite of his solid contribution to his party could not aspire to lead it because of his race, yet he stays on.
Why on earth should people of Luncheon’s ethnicity associate with such crass racism? Luncheon must understand that no Guyanese should be prepared to grovel at the feet of any organization because it offers them a few dollars and some physical comforts.
One may ask about officers who may be of a different ethnicity to Dr. Luncheon. These officers are independent thinkers and will not be able to stifle their consciences for long. They are aware of how vindictive, spiteful and downright inept the PPP is and therefore they will go elsewhere.
Finally, I believe that Dr. Luncheon may have been a coward in his earlier years. To my knowledge he did not serve in any military or paramilitary organization yet he seems eager to dictate what ex-servicemen/women should and should not do. I believe that Dr. Luncheon is a colossal failure in the appointment which he has held for the past 22 years.
His service has done irreparable damage to this country in that he provided or supervised the poorest quality of service to a young struggling nation. Our collective suggestion is that Dr. Luncheon should go home, shut up and save us the earaches of his endless, nonsensical chatter.
