In what appears to be the eighth execution-style killing in three months, 31-year-old Quincy Bowman
was shot in the back of the head at around 04.00 hrs yesterday on a bridge in Nutmeg Street, Festival City.
Bowman, a clothes and cosmetics vendor of Lot 426 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was found lying face-down on the “Busta Bridge,” which links Festival City to Guyhoc Park and is located near a Busta beverage outlet. Police sources said that he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
Speculation is that Bowman, who only returned from French Guiana last December, was lured or forcibly taken to the spot.
Residents told Kaieteur News that they heard two gunshots at around 04.00 hrs. and then heard the sound of a motorcycle leaving the area.
A woman then ventured outside and saw the then unidentified victim, who was dressed in a red long-sleeved, hooded jersey and white three-quarter pants, lying motionless on the bridge.
“She start hollering and everybody come out,” a resident said.
Police reportedly managed to identify the slain man after using a cell phone they found in his pockets to contact his acquaintances. Relatives subsequently identified the body at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Bowman had lived with his brother at Cummings Lodge. Kaieteur News understands that the sibling went out around 21.00 hrs on Saturday, leaving Bowman at home. However, when he returned
at around 01.00 hrs yesterday, there was no sign of Bowman.
“He (the brother) didn’t take it for anything; he just thought that he (Quincy) was hanging, but this morning he get a call from a friend who said that Quincy get shot and we must go to the mortuary to identify him.”
Bowman’s sister said he had no enemies that they knew of. She said that he rarely went out, did not seem to have many friends, and only recently began selling clothing and cosmetics in Georgetown.
Some Festival City residents were heard lamenting the fact that some individuals seemed to be using the area as a killing zone. In Mar, 2011, former light-welterweight boxer Linden ‘Buckman’ Mortley was gunned down on the same ‘Busta Bridge’. Someone had shot him beneath the ear. Mortley had reportedly left home after receiving a telephone call.
Residents said that another man was also chopped to death near the bridge some years ago.
Statistics compiled by Kaieteur News, show that there have been at least 15 gun-related homicides for the year, with eight being execution-style killings.
There were 42 recorded murders up to yesterday.
