A diver is currently searching for the body of 21-year-old Kelton Benjamin who was hit and thrown into the Pomeroon River last evening. Benjamin is feared to have drowned.
Kerlesia Benjamin, the missing lad’s sister, explained that she and 15 other persons from Churches on the Essequibo Coast as well as those from the “Heaven Light Church, located in Dartmouth, were with her brother traveling by boat to the Friendship Ground, in the Lower Pomeroon River to attend a Church concert.
Benjamin said that another boat which was driven by Owen Gonsalves was traveling to Charity when he collided with their boat, causing her brother to fall overboard.
Kerlesia added that her brother was the only person who went under. She said that moments after the incident, the other occupants in their boat were rescued by some residents of the Pomeroon. She said the driver of their boat, Barry Fraser, sustained minor injuries to his foot. He and members of the Church on Monday had launched an intense search for her missing brother.
Young Benjamin stated that her brother worked in the interior, but was living with his parents at Coffee Grove on the Essequibo Coast.
The police at the Charity Outpost have detained Owen Gonsalves, the boat Captain. From his accounts, Gonsalves noted that he was transporting passengers to Charity, Sunday evening, around 19:20 hours when Fraser’s boat swerved into his path causing the collision. Gonsalves is maintaining that visibility was poor at the time.
He said that after the collision, he turned back to see what assistance he could have rendered to the Church members before heading to Charity, where he lodged a report about the incident to the police.
Members of the Church who witnessed the accident also lodged similar reports with the police.
