CP Got Even of the Elcock Poonai Stable with Paul Delph showed that it is a worthy
contender for title of top horse in Guyana with a stunning victory in the feature A1 and lower race when the Jumbo Jet Businesses and Racing Stable in collaboration with the Port Mourant Turf Club held the Annual Guyana Cup Fever Horserace last Sunday at the PMTC.
The atmosphere was charged as the packed arena waited with bated breath for the start of the main attraction. The daunting 1800M distance was bound to be a difficult race with tactics being the watch word. With trainer Elcock throwing two top runners in the event in CP Got Even and Curfew Tower as was the Simple Royal stable with Score Even and Run Nana Run and the highly rated, record breaking Diplomatic Cat ready for its first race in Guyana along with the improving Jack in My Style, the place abuzz with excitement as spectators sought every available vantage point to watch the race.
Into the starting gates and away they went, off on a level break with the speedy Curfew Tower with Yap Drepaul aboard quickly into it stride and going at a searing pace with Score’s
Even fetching 136 pounds on its heels as the two animals traded places. Diplomatic Cat with Trinidadian Stephen was also showing what it is made of as the event went at a blistering pace with Just Call Me Boss also showing some good pace.
Along the back stretch it was anybody’s race, but as the animals entered the far turn it was then that CP Got Even, known to like the longer distances and with its excellent finish, that was sitting pretty in the back but began to make its move followed by Jack In My Style, which is also known to prefer the distance events.
CP Got Even stayed true to form and began to pull away. Half way down the homestretch Paul Delph was urging the animal on as it continued to distance itself from the rest of the field, powering away for and easy win in the end by about six lengths. Jack in My Style came through for second with Diplomatic Cat looking good for third and Curfew Tower held on for fourth as Score’s Even faded to fifth.
Connections of the Elcock stable said the event went according to Plan as it was the decision to let Curfew Tower known for its speed to go out fast and let CP Got Even finish it off. For the win the Elcock connection pocketed a whopping $1.2M and the beautiful Banks DIH Limited trophy.
Spit Fire of the Sheriff and ridden by Randolph Richmond was too hot to handle in D3 maiden and lower plus four year old 1500M event with a devastating late kick down the homestretch to claim the $800,000 and trophy from Goodwill Boy, Captain Crook and Unsettled.
Keep on Swinging of the Jumbo Jet Stable ridden by Trinidadian P. Badree also won with a good run down the homestretch in the 1500M race for three year old West Indies bred horses, collecting the $500,000 purse and trophy ahead of Settling Star, It’s My Choice and Chelsea.
Jockey Colin Ross on Appealing Harvest of the Jumbo Jet stable took the G1 and lower 1200M event with a gate to pole victory. The effort was worth $500,000 and trophy with Sent From Above, Camprador and Cassie the others that placed.
Release the Beast of the Jumbo Jet stable with Trinidadian Badree on the perch had a furious battle with Bridal Stone Corner of the Crawford stable before devouring the field to take the $400,000 and trophy in the G3 and lower1200M race. The others that placed were Compador and Princess Alisha.
Royal Cash with Rupert Ramnauth aboard won the $300,000 and trophy in a close race from Cat Messiah with Mary Ann and Lady Secret trailing in the 1200M three year old and I and lower race.
Secret Escape of the Vibert stable got away with a lucky victory in the controversial J2 and Lower 1000M event and the $250,000 and trophy after it was discovered that the animal ridden by Jamaican Brian Blake had been ridden badly. However after an inquiry it was ruled that the decision would stand with Affinity placing second, Red Jet third and De Gump fourth.
The top stable award went to The Jumbo jet stable with trainer Carlton Pluck of the same entity being adjudged the champion trainer. Trinidad and Tobago Jockey Badree was the champion jockey on show. Over $10M were up for grabs with over 80 horses participating in the incident free day of racing. (Samuel Whyte)
