Dear Editor,
The faithful readers of Kaieteur News ought to know about the high esteem and respect that this newspaper; its Owner and Publisher Glenn Lall; its Editor-in-Chief Adam Harris and their staff have for them. To our knowledge, no one has written about this before so we are now doing so because it is time for us to recognize and give a shout-out to those who have and continue to perform above and beyond of what is expected of them.
Kaieteur News has been at the forefront of exposing corruption and other illegal activities committed by public officials, including those in the cabinet of the Jagdeo/Ramotar government. This paper has become the beacon of breaking news for Guyanese at home, in the Diaspora and the wherever they reside. It has provided the nation with valuable information about politics, mismanagement of the state resources and the atrocities committed by those in authority. It has done so impartially and without prejudice.
And of course, Glenn Lall and Adam Harris need to be congratulated for being able to organize so well, uncover and expose some of the most highly secretive government information that no one else could, and withstand some of the most vicious attacks and civil law suits. They have been through it all but did not throw in the towel. In fact, they came out unscathed, but the battle is not yet over. But this is only one dimension of what Glenn Lall and Kaieteur News have done.
Over the years, Glenn Lall and his staff have given back to society. They have helped the poor and the downtrodden, aided the sick, assisted the homeless, protested on the picket lines with strikers, marched for justice and equality and have provided much needed help to many others too numerous to mention. Simply put; they have been blessed and they have and continue to share their blessings with the less fortunate in society.
But whatever good deeds Glenn Lall has done over the years, his decision to raise funds for the children of the late Courtney Crum Ewing has trumped them all. He is a genuine and dedicated son of the soil with a passion for fairness and justice. He is compassionate and caring so when he was asked by Guyanese at home and in the Diaspora to start a fundraising for the children of Courtney Crum Ewing, he did not refuse. That he readily accepted the request is a testimony to his noble character. We all must say a special thanks to him.
The late Courtney Crum Ewing was politically assassinated and it does not take a rocket scientist to know that those whom he protested against are responsible for his death. So for them to allege that he was a criminal and a nuisance to society and that he was murdered to boost the campaign of the APNU+AFC coalition is just a cover-up.
Not only was this a malicious and vicious murder, clearly it is also an attempt by them to destroy the character of a fine son of the soil, a noble and God-fearing man who can be described as progressive and broadminded and who was working so hard to build a better Guyana for all and future generations. So for them to drag his name into the gutter is a new low in Guyana.
And the Crime Chief and the rest of the top commanders of the police force are in serious denial when they stated that the investigations are continuing. What investigations are they talking about? They have not even interviewed the two persons who Crum Ewing reported had threatened him. Let us be real; the police cannot arrest the “untouchables” and they know it.
So it is either one or two things that will happen with this case that is, the real murderers of Crum Ewing will never be caught and his murder, like many other murders, will become “cold and unsolved murder case” or the police will arrest two young males and pin the murder on them after beating them to confess to it. That is what the PPP Police Force has been doing to please their political bosses.
Plain and simple, the Police Force is not an independent body and cannot act and think on their own; they are told who to charge and not charge. So our advice to the Commissioner, the Crime Chief and the top commanders is to keep their mouths shut tight, because no one believes their stories which are now becoming a drama. They should stop telling tales to the people and just come clean and tell them truth which is their hands are tied behind their backs. The truth shall set them free—AMEN.
We want those who organized his death to know that Courtney Crum-Ewing will not be forgotten; we will keep his name, spirit and all that he stood for and fought for, alive. Even though his inning is over, his flame will keep on burning. We wish to join our fellow citizens in condemning in the most profound way the brutal murder of Crum Ewing. His dedicated service to Guyana and his remarkable contribution for a better Guyana make him one of the most valuable and cherished political activist in the country.
In condemning their dastardly statements, we call on Mr. Ramotar and Mr. Jagdeo to apologize to the nation and the parents, children and relatives of the late Courtney Crum-Ewing. They should let the dead rest in peace. It is the decent thing to do.
Dr. Asquith Rose, Chandra Deolall, Dr. Merle Spencer-Marks
