As the political parties prepare for Nomination Day tomorrow, one party has given the electorate a teaser of its glorious plans for the nation should it come out victorious at the May 11 election.
In fact, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) said it upgraded its plans for the accelerated growth of the nation. These plans are very similar to its attractive election promises sold to the nation when it contested in the 2011 election.
In an elaborate four-page advertisement in the Sunday edition of the Kaieteur Newspaper, the PPP/C boasted that it is the only
political party that has a record of moving the country forward on the path to development. It also stated that it has “delivered”
on its promises.
The party stated that should it be re-elected, it will unleash a plan that will see no one being left behind, along with the
transformation and modernization of the nation with its policies and programmes.
The PPP/C calls its plan “Guyana Version 2.0” which it said will place special emphasis on economic growth, fighting crime,
enhancing wellbeing, fair governance and transformative infrastructure. This roadmap, it said, is realistic, achievable and builds on existing accomplishments.
In relation to improving economic opportunities for all, the government said it will increase manufacturing, implement a national
paddy price support system, commit to sugar investment, establish free economic zones, promote green growth and micro, small and medium scale enterprises.
The establishment of Georgetown By-pass road, specialty hospital, deep water harbour, a new Demerara River Bridge, CJIA expansion project and the Amaila Falls project are all part of its transformative infrastructural plan for Guyana.
It even alluded to Guyana’s “wealth for all” being increased through sustained growth from traditional economic sectors and “new economic frontiers.” It did not expound on the latter.
It also wants to simplify the tax system, improve access to financing and review the impact of taxes and other factors on the cost of living. It promised to also enact the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Legislation.
To demonstrate its unyielding commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of the populace, the PPP/C said that it will spend over $1B to complete the implementation of Community Development Plans in 187 Amerindian Villages and establish a Family Court and an Ambulance Authority.
The party, in an effort to prove just how seriously it takes fair governance, also repeated its 2011 promise to hold Local Government Elections before 2016.
It said too that it is committed to inclusive and participatory governance and will continue to fight against corruption. It also
promised that it will ensure the procurement of goods and services and the execution of works in a fair and equitable manner by the establishing the Public Procurement Commission.
And it does not stop there. In fact, it gets better as the PPP/C has also promised that if it is reelected, it will strengthen the Ombudsman’s office, improve the functioning of Parliament and Judiciary, establish a Special Investigation of Corruption body with special powers to prosecute crimes of corruption, just to list a few.
The incumbent government promised many other glorious things for the electorate once it is allowed another five years in office.
It emphasized that its plan will be one that will see Guyana taking a front row seat in the modern world.
