Former junior sensation Raul Leal who was involved in a vehicular accident that temporarily jolted his rise in the sport signaled a full recovery when he waltzed to victory in the 4th annual Powerade 50-mile cycle road race sponsored by Banks DIH Limited yesterday on the West Demerara.
A member of Team Evolution, Leal’s winning time was One Hour 55 Minutes 44 Seconds, 11 seconds better than last year’s top time. Following Leal to the line were 2014 winner Orville Hinds, Berbice’ Andrew Hicks, Paul De Nobrega, Akeem Wilkinson and Ian Deaf Boy’ Jackson to close out the top six.
The race which attracted 34 starters, pedaled off from the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara proceeded to Bushy Park on the East Bank Essequibo before returning to Schoonord, West Bank Demerara for the conclusion.
Leal and Hinds shared six of the sprint prizes between them equally while Hicks took the top prize among the junior riders with Alanzo Ambrose second and Jaleel Jackson third.
Junior Niles was again unstoppable in the veteran’s class, winning ahead of Jude Bentley and Collis Williams. Leading the podium spots in the mountain bike category was Keon Thomas who was followed by Deeraj Garbarran and Richard Charles in that order.
