What started out as a day of celebration quickly shifted when a wedding house brawl left two men hospitalized, nursing serious wounds.
Even as the men are recuperating, their family members are seeking justice for what they deem an unnecessary level of violence.
Hospitalized are Astraff Ally and Shohib Shaw who suffered injuries during a wedding house fight and later again at the Leguan Cottage Hospital where they were seeking medical attention.
A source confirmed the attacks.
Nazim Abdool, a cousin of the injured men explained to this publication that the incident occurred on Sunday at about 16:00hrs. He said that his daughter had been dancing at the wedding when she was approached from behind by a young man. The man then proceeded to “brace her” against a fence. Further, with a glass bottle to her neck, he reportedly questioned why she could dance with other men but not him.
Abdool said that Ally, the girl’s uncle, aided by Shaw, her cousin, intervened but the young man became enraged. An altercation quickly ensued during which Ally and Shaw were injured. The young man reportedly left the wedding house while the injured men sought medical attention at the Leguan Cottage Hospital.
However, things did not end there; relatives told Kaieteur News that while Ally and Shaw were in the hospital, five men – including the young man from the wedding house – stormed the hospital to attack them.
“You shoulda seen how these men just run in the hospital; the doctors and nurses had to seek shelter,” Judd Shaw, another relative, told this newspaper. He added that the attackers were armed with cutlasses and pieces of wood.
While in the hospital, Ally and Shohib Shaw were reportedly severely beaten. Further, reports indicate that at least one police officer had been present at the hospital but did not react to the ongoing attack.
The attackers managed to escape but were subsequently arrested on Monday after relatives of the injured men sought assistance from the Eve Leary Police Station.
However, the men were all eventually released before Tuesday.
Relatives are alleging that the young man’s family has “links” to the police and they are gloating about it. Relatives also said that they are unaware of any charges being brought against the men.
“We’re just not getting any satisfaction from the police,” Adbdool lamented.
The injured men have been transferred to a city hospital.
