The prosecution yesterday closed its case in the murder trial of Michael Powley, who is accused of fatally
stabbing his neighbour during an argument almost three years ago.
According to the indictment, Powley murdered Visnauth Narine called ‘Buddy,’ on June 8, 2012 at Plastic City, West Coast Demerara.
Reports indicated that Narine lived next door to Powley at Plastic City, and on the day of the incident, they were allegedly engaged in an altercation during which the victim sustained stab wounds in the region of his chest. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over a cooking gas cylinder.
Following the confrontation, Powley fled the scene, and Narine was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention. He was subsequently arrested and is currently on trial before Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed- twelve member jury at the High Court in Georgetown.
Seven witnesses have taken the stand to testify in the trial, including Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh and Police Lance Corporal, Denzil Frank.
Yesterday, State Prosecutors Natasha Backer and Narissa Leander called their final witness to the stand before closing their case. The matter commenced on February 22 last. Defence Attorney, Basil Williams is currently making submissions in the absence of the jury. The matter is scheduled for continuation today.
