Dear Editor,
The assassination of Courtney Crum-Ewing on the night of March 10, 2015 is a stark reminder that Guyana is less than democratic and therefore people perceived as opponents of the government are subject to varied forms of attacks.
The late Courtney Crum-Ewing found it necessary to mount a solo protest campaign against the pervasive allegations of crime, corruption, bad governance, discrimination and unemployment plaguing our nation and to which there appeared to be no end in sight. For his effort he was besmirched and ridiculed by Government mouth pieces and even harassed by members of the Guyana Police Force.
According to newspapers account of the killing of the solitary peaceful campaigner, it would appear to have been a well orchestrated and executed professional execution plot.
Since he was like a gnat annoying the leaders of Government with his peaceful but potent counter Government messages, moreover his call at the time of his demise for the people of the Diamond Community to vote out the PPP/C due to its bad governance policies, his detractors no doubt decided to use the opportunity afforded due to inadequate streetlights in the area where he is resident to co-ordinate an ambush to deadly effect.
Newspapers account referred to him running away from gun fire from a pursuing motor car in a certain area of Diamond new housing scheme, only to be confronted by an oncoming motor car from which gun fire was also unleashed against him.
It is reasonable to suspect that a conspiracy in very high places may have been responsible for the death of the solo protester.
Given the genesis of Crum-Ewing’s taking to protest, Guyanese cannot overlook his murder at this point in time.
It has been reported that at the time of his death he was calling on his fellow residents of Diamond East Bank Demerara to come out and vote for APNU+AFC Coalition at Elections scheduled for May 11, 2015.
In honour and respect to the fallen hero a solo protester, I plead that all electors of Region Four should come out and vote solidly for the APNU+AFC coalition.
A change of Government is now an imperative that cannot be delayed.
