Five months after Presidential Advisor on Sustainable Development, Science and Technology, Navindranauth Chandarpal, passed away, the Ministry of Education honoured his achievements to the Science, Technology
and Innovation (STI) field.
His wife, Indranie Chandarpal, was on hand to collect the award on his behalf.
The award of appreciation was given yesterday during the opening ceremony of a National Workshop on STI where Chandarpal was hailed as a major contributor to the field.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand said that Chandarpal’s contributions to the entire structuring of the government’s focus “cannot be overstated”.
“We shall forever remain grateful. In fact, he lives in these kinds of policies and positions that we carry on with; he lives in the five-year strategy we are going to shortly publish and he will live beyond that policy,” Manickchand said.
She added that his existing work will be used to craft other policies and initiatives in Guyana.
“I was extremely sad when he died because he lives in these policies and that, for me, is what he would have wanted,” Manickchand added.
Ms Changarpal, in her acceptance speech, expressed pleasure at the award and the fact that her husband’s contributions were being recognised.
“All of you who had the opportunity to interact with Navin would have known about his passion and dedication to Science and Technology and the Environment. And we are indeed pleased that the National Science Policy has indeed become a reality because I know he started the process since 2008.
“It’s important that today we have such a policy. I am grateful that the Ministry of Education and all the educators are involved in this process,” Ms. Chandarpal said.
Chandarpal passed away last October after a battle with cancer.
