Former Fruta Conquerors player Pernell Schulz netted a first half double to hand Guyana’s Golden Jaguars a 2-0 victory over CFU rival Grenada at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence last night.
Schultz fired home in the 18th and 32nd minutes as the Golden Jaguars romped to yet another victory on home soil after defeating St. Lucia by a similar margin one week ago.
The host dominated early proceedings as captain Chris Nurse was denied by the opposition goalkeeper following a right sided corner kick in the fifth minute.
Golden Jaguars should have taken the lead one minute later, but an unchallenged Schultz fired his shot wide of an empty net from within the box.
But Schultz did not disappoint, after receiving a cross from Verlon Mills, he sent his shot into the right hand corner of the net twelve minutes later to spark wild celebrations among the local fans.
The Golden Jaguars continued to dominate proceedings and Schultz doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute when he sent his shot pass an advancing goalkeeper as Guyana enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the break. The Jaguars continued to dominate after the interval – Eon Alleyne almost found the back of the net, but he fired his shot wide after latching on to left side pass from Briggs which avoided the opposition defence.
Substitute Sheldon Holder who replaced Schultz, wasted a wonderful opportunity to extend the Jaguars lead in the 65th minute. After the ball bounced past the advancing keeper inside the box, Holder lost control and allowed the Grenada defence to recover possession.
To add salt into the wounds of the visitors, their centre half Shannon Phillip was sent off in the 75th minute after handing the ball for the second time.
More chaos met the Grenadians when their head-coach Lester Smith was separated from the technical area for unsportsmanlike behaviour moments later.
Grenada hardly had a shot on target, but Cassim Langaigne wasted an opportunity to pull one back in the 83rd minute when his header found the cross bar from the inside the six-yard box.
Speaking at the post match conference, Grenada’s Lester Smith said the game served as an opportunity for them to observe more players. He congratulated the Golden Jaguars. Guyana’s Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz stated that their victory is a result of the people working together for the development of Guyanese football. In giving praise to the almighty Shabazz said that this is what Caribbean football needs. He also stressed the need for corporate support adding that sport unites all.
Earlier, West Demerara U23 defeated Berbice U23 2-1 in a friendly encounter.
