Medicine Chest offer corporate support
By Michael Benjamin
Tactical play and strong tackles characterized the early stages of the match and
gave the uninitiated the impression that a slugfest was in store. However, the situation changed drastically as the game progressed and at the final whistle Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United reigned supreme by a crushing 5-0 margin over the Georgetown Football Club when the Kashif and Shanghai Football extravaganza resumed at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground last Friday evening.
Slingerz also continued its good showing and booted out Conquerors 3-2 during extra time after the regulation period ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Manasseh Primo netted a double for Alpha in the 50th and 64th minutes to lead Alpha’s onslaught with support from Jamal Smith (38), Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant (90+ 1) and Ronson Abrams from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.
Slingerz’ regulation goal was scored by Dwayne Lawrence (34) while the opposition equalized in the 82nd minute through Travis Thornhill (82). The winning goal during extra time period was netted by Anthony Abrams in the 99th minute.
Play resumed last night with two other quarterfinal matches; Pele took on Winners Connection, while Western squared off with Riddim Squad. The winner of the first encounter will clash with Alpha, while Slingerz will return to play the winner of the Winners Connection/West Ruimveldt shindig. Those results will appear in a subsequent edition.
Meanwhile, the K&S group continued to receive goodwill from the corporate sector and yesterday morning, one of the Directors, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, trooped to the Medicine Chest, Middle Street, Georgetown, where Pharmacist, Desiree Cerez, donated a substantial amount towards the success of the tournament. Mr. Major received the donation on behalf of his organization and expressed profound gratitude to his benefactor.
The K&S Director said that the Medicine Chest has always been a friend to his organization and yesterday’s gesture represented a continuity of a healthy relationship established several years ago. He also assured Ms. Cerez that the donation would enhance his organizational structure.
Ms. Cerez expressed delight on behalf of her company in receiving the opportunity to assist in the development of the sport. She said that her firm provides essential medicines and ointments for the athletes’ care and protection along with body builders and vitamin tablets. Mr. Major then urged the public to support the business which in effect meant supporting the development of the youths.
When the competition commenced, sixteen teams were lined up for honours. Several of those teams have since been booted out but speculation as to which unit will add the ‘Holy Grail’ to its collection is still raging.
Matches are being played at the DCC and several venues around Georgetown as well as in the rural areas, Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Uitvlugt and Leonora with the grand finals taking place at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5. The winning team will cart off two million dollars with the runners up winning half that amount. The third and fourth prizes are five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
