Investigators continue to question persons from the Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) where the bullet riddled body of Political Activist Courtney Crum-Ewing was found almost a month ago.
In a statement yesterday, the police said that they are actively scrutinizing video footage of the shooting which occurred some time around 19:40 hrs on March 10, last.
So far, eight persons have been questioned in connection with the execution-style killing of Crum-Ewing, a father of three. They were subsequently released.
A senior police official said, “We are working assiduously to ensure that we get to the bottom of this one. It is important for the members of the public to know what we are doing. I don’t want them to see the police in a different light.”
The official added, “Given the speculation…there is only one way we can change the perception and bring an end to this; and that is to solve this one. I can tell you that we are putting all the intelligence together to ensure this case is solved.”
Kaieteur News was told that the police have checked 10 surveillance cameras in the street where the activist was killed.
The surveillance footage, according to the official, is blurred and is being developed.
Crime Chief, Leslie James had said that the Guyana Police Force will go “wherever this investigation leads” in its quest to apprehend the individuals who riddled Crum-Ewing.
The 40-year-old man was shot twice to the temple, once to the back of the head, and twice to the stomach.
The killer(s) used a .32 pistol and fired at such close range that gunpowder burns were left on Crum-Ewing’s clothes and body.
Police had stated that Crum-Ewing was accosted by men in a car, one of whom discharged several rounds, hitting him about his body.
However, other reports suggest that there were only two men in the car that transported the shooter.
A second car with another two men came up soon after. Police have also received reports that there was a brief verbal confrontation before the gunfire.
Kaieteur News was told that minutes before the 40-year-old man was killed, he was reportedly
heard via a bullhorn, urging residents of the neighbourhood to vote against the ruling party.
But his vocal effort was interrupted when the killer(s) struck.
Crum-Ewing made the news for carrying out his one-man protest in front of the Carmichael Street, Georgetown office of Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, late last year.
