As part of their preparation for the CONCACAF round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers Russia 2018, an upbeat Guyana’s Golden Jaguars will take on Grenada from 20:30 hrs tonight at the National Stadium, Providence.
Goals either side of half time from Eon Alleyne and Sheldon Holder gave the Jaguars a hard fought 2-0 victory against St. Lucia last Sunday at the said venue and Guyanese will again be hoping for a similar result. The Guyana team has been boosted with the inclusion of left back Matthew Briggs who is on loan to Colchester from Millwall FC in England, midfielder Neil Danns of Bolton Wanderers and goalkeeper Anthony Whyte of Sigma FC in Canada. The trio had earlier expressed delight to be part of the local team, while Coach Jamaal Shabazz said they are happy to be back on the field one week later for another warm up game.
He stated that this game opens up an avenue for them to see more players. “Only five of the players who started the last game will start in this game and this gives us an opportunity to widen the pool of players for the national team going forward,” he pointed out.
“Of course the result is important, but it is crucial for us to see how some of the new players blend into the team like Neil Danns and Matthew Briggs with the experience they bring. Then we have two young players in Pernell Schultz and goalkeeper Anthony Whyte who will get starts today and get the opportunity to gain exposure,” Shabazz explained.
“It’s not about changing a winning team but more about building the programme looking further down the road. We want to make the team so competitive that it will give us headaches to select and that has already started to happen,” the coach lamented.
The full squad reads: Goalkeepers Anthony Whyte and Akel Clarke; Defenders Joshua Brown, King Solomon Austin, Daniel Whyte, Matthew Briggs, Jamaal Smith and Colin Nelson; Midfielders Clive Nobrega, Konata Mannings, Neil Danns, Eon Alleyne, Trayon Bobb, Vurlon Mills, Walter Moore and Chris Nurse (Captain); Strikers Emery Welshman, Purnell Schultz, Sheldon Holder and Daniel Wilson.
Admission to the venue is $1,000 for general seating, $4,000 for VIP, while children under 12 will be admitted free.
