The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has been holding initial talks with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF),
Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Guyana Fire Service (GFS), with the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) next, aimed at resuscitating the Joint Services Boxing Championships following a more than ten year absence of the event.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle recently met and had fruitful discussions with GDF head, Brigadier Mark Phillips, Commissioner of Police Seelal Persaud and GFS boss Marlon Gentle on the restart of the event.
Ninvalle disclosed that the senior military officials readily agreed for the restart of the event and committed to lending whatever assistance is necessary. Official discussions on the way forward are imminent to concretise the programme.
Ninvalle informed that they are looking to commence activities for this restart in the second half of this year. He noted that GBA will, where and when necessary, assist with seconding coaching staff to the respective institutions to aid the preparation of the fighters. He noted that National Coach Wincel Thomas has been at the GPS and their boxers put on a good show at a recent event giving the army fighters a torrid time. It must be noted that the fighters coming out of the prison system would be Prison Officers and not prisoners involved in their programme.
The GBA head noted that after a review of the GDF Novice Championships, the support received by those participating from their fellow ranks was heartening and can spill over to the Joint Services programme.
All the organizations have produced several outstanding boxers over the years with the latest batch featuring Imran Khan and Dennis Thomas of the Police and Eon Bancroft of the Army just to name a few are testament of the caliber of the fighters involved.
The hope in restarting the Joint Service event is that it will positively affect that and eventually the national programme, producing quality fighters who will go onto representing Guyana with distinction.
