Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) launched the 10th annual National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after seeking and gaining approval from the parent body for basketball in Guyana, The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).
GABF President, Nigel Hinds (front row, third right) and YBG Director, Chris Bowman (on his right) along with sponsors and schools yesterday usher in the 10th Schools’ Basketball Festival at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
YBG Director, Chris Bowman expressed pleasure to launch the 10th edition of the event while thanking all stakeholders, including GABF, Digicel, Beharry Group of Companies, Banks DIH, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, for their support over the years.
Bowman noted that it was extremely gratifying to have the sanction of GABF despite whatever issues might have strained their relationship in the past. Last year, under the new leadership, the GABF had sought to regularise the YBG programme by having them officially sanctioned under the tenants of the federation.
Initially, YBG had refused to comply with the GABF request, forcing the parent body to impose sanctions on their programme. However, after the intervention of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), GABF and YBG arrived at an amicable solution.
President of the GABF, Nigel Hinds observed yesterday that the tournament is one that can help in the developmental thrust of the federation. He challenged YBG to full the stands of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall as the best basketball-playing schools converge at the venue for the tournament.
The three main sponsors are Digicel, Beharry Group of Companies and Banks DIH. The various regional competitions of the NSBF are set to tip off on April 20 across Guyana.
