…police say investigation underway
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament, Vanessa Kissoon, could face charges
stemming from allegations that she disrupted a People’s Progressive Party/Civic Public meeting on Tuesday evening. Contrary to other media reports she was not arrested.
Minister of Social Services Jennifer Webster and junior Finance Minister Juan Edghill were the main speakers at the meeting, which was being held in Blueberry Hill, Wismar, and Linden. According to reports, the meeting was about to start when Kissoon, with her supporters, arrived and began behaving disorderly. They were warned to desist from their actions and Kissoon moved away.
A female supporter however remained and continued chanting and making noise, resulting in her being arrested and processed. She was subsequently released on self bail, pending a subsequent charge.
According to a senior police official, the fact that Kissoon departed after the first warning was issued does not mean that she is not culpable and the police force will in fact proceed to issue a summons so she could face charges.
Speaking at a press conference at the newly opened A Partnership for National Unity head office, located at 133 Crown Street, Queenstown, APNU/AFC executive member Raphael Trotman put to rest rumors that Kissoon had been arrested.
According to Trotman, the party was dealing with the report and an investigation is ongoing. Trotman, who
is involved in the case, stated that there was the belief that Kissoon had been deliberately provoked.
“Miss Kissoon is one of the more exuberant opposition leaders. My view is that the PPP is deliberately provoking and baiting her. So we ask for restraint on both sides. It is a case of cranking, where you put a red flag in front of someone and they react. But we condemn any acts of hostility, violence or intimidation against ourselves and we would not perpetuate it against others.”
“We cautioned our activists to stay away from other parties political meetings. Don’t allow yourself to be provoked. Our members have been harassed and provoked and we haven’t been crying foul about it.”
He said that as of Wednesday Kissoon had not been charged. However the police are conducting an investigation and Kissoon has already been advised that she may be summoned.
