– 15 percent jump in homicides
There’s been a 15 percent increase in murders between January and March 23, 2015, with 38 people being slain during this period.
In contrast, police recorded 33 murders between January and March 2014, according to statistics released yesterday by the Police Public Relations Department.
Kaieteur News has compiled 13 gun-related homicides for the year with seven being execution-style killings that remain unsolved.
The release stated that police have also recorded a one percent increase in serious crimes for this year, in comparison to the same period in 2014.
But according to the release, robberies in which firearms were used, decreased by 28 percent and robberies in which other instruments were used, decreased by six percent.
Police said that investigations are ongoing into the murder of Courtney Crum-Ewing which occurred on March 10, 2015, at Diamond, EBD. Eight persons were questioned and subsequently released.
“The police are actively questioning persons from the community and scrutinizing video footage as the investigation continues,” the release added.
“In relation to the murder of 14-year-old Alicia Ali, whose body was found on the seawall at Turkeyen, ECD, on March 25, 2015, the parents and close relatives are assisting with the investigations, while a male friend from the community is being questioned as the investigations progress,” police said.
“The body of the dismembered female that was found on the Annandale Foreshore, ECD, yesterday Thursday March 26, 2015, has not yet been identified. No arrest has been made in this matter so far. The police are questing persons from the surrounding communities and checking recent missing person reports in efforts to identify the deceased.”
Meanwhile, police urged members of the public to record and store the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of their cell phones for future reference. The production of this number in instances where instruments have been stolen can greatly assist investigators in apprehending suspects or questioning persons.
