Magistrate Annette Singh sentenced a man to one month imprisonment after he was found guilty of assaulting another, when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Deshane Pitt was convicted for assaulting Edward Dowridge, on February 3, at the South Ruimveldt bus park, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
According to prosecutor Adduni Inniss’ facts, Pitt and Dowridge had an argument over an alleged traffic offence. She stated that Dowridge reported the matter to the police and Pitt was arrested, charged and fined for the offence.
Subsequently, the defendant confronted the victim on the bus park and they had an exchange of words. The victim told him that what happened to him, “serves him right”. As a result the defendant became annoyed and dealt the victim several cuffs to his face, which left him in an unconscious state.
Inniss further added that a few minutes later the victim managed to regain consciousness and reported the matter to the Stabroek police outpost.
Before handing down her sentencing the magistrate considered all mitigating factors. She considered the fact that the defendant admitted he carried out the act.
Pitt asked the magistrate to show leniency because his parents are deceased and he is now left with the responsibility of taking care of his younger siblings.
Pitt was subsequently sentenced to one month imprisonment, on an offence that attracts a maximum eighteen -month penalty.
