…willing to provide power to over 6000 homes
The highly anticipated Giftland Mall will be generating its own electrical power when
the shopping complex opens on Independence Day, May 26. During a tour of the mall’s construction site, on Thursday, media operatives had the chance to glimpse the facility’s US$4M power plant said to generate 5MW of electricity.
Speaking to the press on the magnitude of the power plant, Giftland President, Roy Beepat, explained that when completed, the 60,000 square feet complex will consume upwards of 1.8MW of power at peak time. Beepat described the power plant as the company’s most expensive investment. He deemed it a necessary venture, since the shopping complex’s electrical demands could not be met by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Company.
“We are all aware of the unreliability of the power supply. In order to have a mall with all this space for people to come and relax, be with their friends and family, and be in a nice cool air conditioned area, we needed to address the power issue. To power the area through GPL or regular generators would actually be incredibly expensive from the onset and would have made the project not viable at all,” said Beepat.
According to Beepat, the facility will be operated by two 2.5MW MAN engines and will
run on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). He also noted the power plant is designed to have full redundancy in terms of electricity, thus making the complex self sustainable.
“We are just awaiting the fuel tanks. And once those arrive during April and May the whole mall will be ready to open,” explained the businessman. “It is necessary for a mall like this to use between 1.5 to 2 megawatts per day for consumption.”
Moreover, the power plant will be able to generate 3.8MW daily with Beepat remarking that his company is willing to share the excess power to over 6,0000 homes in the vicinity of the mall. He said that the most expensive part of the mall was the actual power plant and that once the cost is covered, the company would be happy to collaborate with the government and supply Guyanese.
The power plant is predicted to be commissioned by the end of April, and will allow the mall to be fully operational. Beepat said that once that happens, the company will be looking towards an Independence Day opening for the shopping complex.
The Giftland Mall is anticipated, by the owner, to have over 20,000 visitors a day and will create over 2,000 direct employment opportunities.
Additionally, to facilitate the large number of persons passing through, the mall will have Guyana’s “very first” bus terminal, with washrooms, lockers, food concessions, sitting areas and television.
“People will be able to come and change – not only come to the mall but use the bus terminal to hub from one point to another. We anticipate buses will be coming from Lethem and Linden, from Rosignol and Parika,” said Beepat.
Meanwhile, the Giftland Company signed a deal with the internationally recognised brand, Levi’s and Dockers to be the mall’s exclusive retailer of the products. Crystal Ramdeo, Levi country representative expressed confidence in the business venture. She said that the mall’s Levi outlet will be the first “stand alone store” in the Caribbean.
