Government says that it is set to start issuing a new passport with enhanced security from Monday.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been working for some time to ensure that the passport is protected as much as possible from tampering.
The Ministry said, yesterday, that at his 2014 end-of-year address to the police, Minister Clement Rohee indicated that a contract had been signed with Canadian Bank Note Company Limited (CBN) to upgrade the security features of Guyana’s machine-readable passports in order to safeguard the integrity of the documents.
The Minister also indicated that the issuance of the new passports would commence in 2015 and the old passports would be gradually phased out.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs is happy to report that the process of upgrading the passports has been completed to the satisfaction of the Ministry and issuance of the new documents will commence with effect from Monday 30th March 2015.”
The Ministry said that the project is part of Government’s plan to continually improve border security in Guyana.
It was only a few years ago that Guyana had introduced the machine-readable passports but there were still instances of fraud forcing Government to consider an upgrade.
