Clement Rohee’s final insult to Cheddi Jagan

I lived in Guyana under the administration of Forbes Burnham. I did so in the Desmond Hoyte period. I came to know some Ministers and high state officials in the reign of Mr. Burnham because we were contemporaries at university.
I held a totally different political perspective to those who were in the service of both Presidents Burnham and Hoyte but these people were intelligent, educated and rational human beings. I didn’t share their style of politics but their speeches, logic, semantics and reasoning were average and sometimes above average.
I have never seen someone with the low level of understanding in the two PNC governments as I have seen with Clement Rohee. Mr. Jagdeo was a terribly abominable leader. Mr. Ramotar is a congenital fumbler. But Mr. Rohee is simply an unbelievably silly human being.
Every week Mr. Rohee holds a press briefing on behalf of the PPP, not his Ministry. Without exception, Mr. Rohee makes a mockery of logic and reasoning. If one is deeply religious and would not laugh at one’s fellow human, Rohee would make such a person laugh at him. Mr. Rohee’s latest excursion into Circo Romano is his take on Jagdeo’s comment on the house of Cheddi Jagan.
Speaking on behalf of the PPP, he said that Mr. Jagdeo’s emanation was not the PPP’s position because the words did not come from the PPP General Secretary. So far so good; Mr. Rohee is on perfect ground. Then Mr. Rohee entered Circo Romano by pointing out that he, Rohee, as General-Secretary was not distancing himself from Jagdeo’s words on Jagan’s house.
No human being so stupid and asinine should be part of the administration of a country in the 21st century, not even a 10th rate banana republic like Guyana. Let’s examine Mr. Rohee’s prodigious asininity. Not to distance yourself from a stated position of another person simply means that you have not rejected what they said and that there is a certain level of acceptance on your part of the stated position.
To distance oneself from the public statement of another person is to put space between you and the person. It means that you don’t want to be associated with the attitude. This is what the expression, “distancing yourself” means. In actual fact, what you have done is that you have openly said you don’t approve of the stated position.
Mr. Rohee has publicly said that he will not distance himself from Jagdeo’s description of the upper class house of Dr. Jagan. Then by what logic, by what law of reasoning, can one say that Mr. Rohee has rejected what Jagdeo uttered? He has not. The only way both Rohee and the PPP can claim to honour Dr. Jagan’s legacy, is to unambiguously reject Jagdeo’s fiction that Dr. Jagan’s house at the time was a privileged entity
What Rohee thought he had done was to please both Jagdeo and Jagan’s daughter who denounced Jagdeo. But instead, Rohee has made himself a fool because he has not as yet distanced his party from Jagdeo’s derogation of Jagan’s legacy.
Given the psychological make-up of Rohee I would think that he believes that he has accomplished that task.
It is up to Nadira Jagan to confront Rohee on his duplicity. In fact, Rohee has made the ultimate insult to Dr. Cheddi Jagan by not distancing himself from Jagdeo’s besmirching of the name of the PPP founder. Nadira Jagan has ammunition with which to denounce the entire PPP. It is the PPP through its administrative and legal head that has clearly refused to disassociate itself from Jagdeo’s ramblings.
The question that has become fascinating is why Dr. Jagan’s beneficiaries have not come to his rescue as his daughter urged. Rohee admitted in a television interview that it was the Jagans that rescued him from an employed youthful life. Gail Texieira was Jagan’s personal assistant for twenty years before the PPP came to power so she must have been in Jagan’s modest house millions of times. Kellawan Lall lived in that very house.
Nadira Jagan and her brother have to face the cruel fact that Jagan’s PPP is dead and the beneficiaries of Jagan have moved on and are happy inhabitants of the Jagdeoite PPP. Jagan’s daughter isn’t going to have her father’s protégés come to the rescue of her father’s name because for those protégés, Jagan and his wife belong to the past and they have to live with Jagdeo who now controls the PPP and the Government that employs them. Not to mention that Mr. Jagdeo has made each and every one of them stupendously wealthy.
