Several days after he was brutally chopped by his fellow inmates at the Camp Street jail, Tampico Mc Kenzie 29, of 29 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was yesterday granted $75.000 bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman on a robbery charge.
Mc Kenzie was earlier remanded on a charge which alleged that on February 6, last, while at Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt Park, he, together with William Evans, 24, of 444 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, armed with a knife, robbed Marissa Hohenkirk of her Apple iPhone, one gold chain, a gold and diamond ring and three gold bands.
Both defendants have since maintained their innocence on the allegation.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Shellon Daniels had objected to bail on Mc Kenzie’s first appearance (February 9) because of the serious, prevalence and nature of the offence. Daniels told the court that the suspects were arrested after the victim herself ran them over with her car, soon after she was robbed. She claimed that the men were searched and the stolen items were found on them. Daniels further claimed that both of the men admitted to committing the robbery.
However, Mc Kenzie and Evans had a different story. The duo told the court that they were forced and threatened by the police to sign statements admitting that they carried out the unlawful act.
Mc Kenzie made several allegations against the police, he explained that while at the police station, the officers took away $5000 and a New Testament that he had in his possession, and told him, that “he has nothing to get back” He claims that one officer even held his head over a gutter, and told him that he would kill him if he did not sign the statement admitting his guilt.
He also accused the police of hitting him in the head repeatedly.
The other defendant remains remanded.
