It has been almost two weeks since 23-year-old Deochand ‘Avo’ Sukhlal was allegedly stabbed to death before his body was dumped into the Pomeroon River. His body has still not been recovered.
While hope grows dimmer for Sukhlal’s family members of recovering his body, they are calling for justice to be served; to let his killer(s) be punished.
The fisherman of Dundee Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was allegedly stabbed to death by one of his crew members two Sundays ago before his body was dumped into the river three days later.
The suspect, who has been identified as “Spanish Man”, is in police custody at the Charity Police Station.
Navin Singh, the captain of the vessel in which the fisherman was killed, had informed this newspaper that the suspect had planned to kill all three persons on board, including him, and sell the boat in Venezuela.
He said that he went out on sea on March 7, last, with Sukhlal, along with two other workers, including “Spanish man.”
According to the captain, everything was normal at sea until two Sundays ago (March 15) when “Spanish Man” started his attack.
He explained that he was at the back of the boat with one of the crew members while “Spanish Man” and the now dead Sukhlal were at the front.
The captain said that after some time passed and he did not see his two workers, the worker who was with him, went at the front to inquire.
It was then that he saw “Spanish Man” approaching him with three knives. “He tie up my hands behind my back and he tied my waist to the boat and I was steering with my foot for hours. He tell me drive to Venezuela.”
Later that day, the suspect, according to Singh, carried him to the front of the boat and showed him the body of the 23-year-old fisherman, while also informing him that he was next.
Singh added that when he was informed that he was going to be killed, he bargained for his life.
“I bargain for my life. I tell him I got 10 children to support, and if he want throw me away let him at least give me a life jacket and the other guy begged him too and say I was good to them. That is how he throw me with the fish.”
The captain further added that the knife-wielding suspect, on the third day of being under his captivity, fell asleep. He said that the other worker steered the boat to the mouth of the Pomeroon River where they managed to escape.
“A man name Albert rescued us and while ‘Spanish Man’ sleeping in the boat, Albert left to go call the Coast Guard in his small boat. When he left, I was at the top of a coconut tree peeping ‘Spanish Man’ all the time,” Singh recounted.
He said that when the suspect awoke and noticed he was alone in the boat, he turned around and tried to escape, but was caught three hours later by the Coast Guard.
“When the Coast Guard catch he, he had already dumped Avo body in the River because it already started to get stiff and it started to smell,” the captain said.
He said that it was the first time he had gone out at sea with ‘Spanish Man.’
