– in commemoration of 50th Anniversary
Gold-plated special edition coins were issued by the Bank of Guyana (BOG) yesterday to commemorate its 50th Anniversary.
Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh and Governor of BOG Dr. Gobind Ganga were the keynote speakers at the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ganga reflected on how far the Bank had come over the years.
Dr. Singh extended congratulations to the Bank on its achievements. According to the Finance Minister, the Bank was not just founded as a financial institution, but as preparation for Guyana’s independence.
“The establishment of our own Central Bank was a prerequisite for the attainment of Guyana’s independence. It’s significant that in only a few months, October, after the Bank would have celebrated 50 years, Guyana would have celebrated 50 years of independence.”
“It is a limited edition piece, so you are buying a part of Guyana’s history. So I urge Guyanese living here and abroad to delve into the vastness of our history.”
He also spoke about Guyana’s strong financial status, stating that it did not happen by accident, but
as a result of specific choices the Government had made over the years, such as legislative interventions that deepened the financial market.
He also took a moment to reflect on the passing of former Governor of BOG, Lawrence Williams, who he described as his friend. Williams died in May last year. Only 1000 of the gold-plated coins have been made. They will be available from tomorrow for G$7000 each. Interested persons can call BOG at 226 3251-9.
