No bail for gold miner accused of coke trafficking

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a gold miner to prison after it was alleged he had cocaine in his possession.
Lloyd Munroe, 36, of West Coast Berbice, denied the accusation which stated that on March 25, at 111 Mile Mahdia, he had four grams of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Munroe’s attorney Jerome Khan, strongly contended for his client to be released on bail. He stated that his client is firmly denying the accusation. He added that the defendant should be released on bail because of the quantity of drug involved in the charge. Khan argued that his client was found with four grams and not four pounds of cocaine.
Counsel explained that on the day in question, his client went to the police station to lodge a complaint about his missing money. While at the station, Munroe was told by the police that they needed to carry out a search of his belongings. Munroe and the police proceeded back to the area, which is accessible to the public. The police found a substance suspected to be cocaine and arrested his client, counsel said.
On the other hand, prosecutor police corporal Bharrat Mangru’s facts differed. He told the court that on the day in question the police went to the home of the defendant and conducted a search. During the search the police found a small container that was on the floor containing the illegal drug.
The prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that the lawyer did not provide the court with any special reasons.
However, the lawyer advanced special reasons; he told the court that the next sitting at the Mahdia Magistrate’s court is in April, and that it would be unfair for his client to be incarcerated until that time.
Counsel’s bail application was refused and the defendant was remanded to prison.
His matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for April 28.
