Dear Editor,
‘Back in the days’ when we were young men, we learned that those who use indecent language (cuss words) or other inappropriate words to express themselves in public were lacking in proper English vocabulary. And so we supplemented our reading with the use of dictionaries and encyclopedia to improve our language skills. In the process, we learned etiquette and how to conduct ourselves at the various levels of society.
Recently, public discourse by some politicians leaves much to be desired. I have heard and listened to leading politicians the likes of Burnham, Rodney, Hoyte and the Jagans and even Sam Hinds, and many others, and I have never heard such crass comments from them as that which we have heard and are hearing from Jagdeo and now Ramotar; calling a citizen a nuisance among some of the other idiocies which proceeded from his mouth.
Never before in the history of our beloved Guyana has public discourse been as ignominious as what obtains today. Gone are the days when office holders conducted themselves with dignity and pride, and the citizens gave the due respect.
Editor, it clear that these two men, Jagdeo and Ramotar, have brought the Office of President into disrepute. It was evident a long time ago and clearer now that both these men, who are supposed to be honourable, are intellectually challenged, lacking in certain proprieties and aesthetics and have no oratory skills.
Editor, how much more infamy must come to the highest office of the land before we as a people can say enough?!
From the Shakespeare play, Antonius, at Caesar´s funeral, says “O judgement, thou are fled to bruthish beasts and men have lost their reason”. Have we lost our rationale?
