The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) will benefit from the sponsorship of Alvin
Chowramootoo of Alvin Chowramootoo Construction Services as the Company sponsors a t20 cricket competition for second division teams in West Berbice.
This follows other second division competitions sponsored by Hand-in-Hand Insurance and the New Building Society Limited.
The sponsor is the President of the successful D’Edward Sports Club and explained that he is a keen follower of cricket and is always impressed with the confidence other stakeholders of cricket have shown in the BCB and as a result was convinced that the board was doing something right. He added that he is also impressed with the mileage received by sponsors and the level of transparency of the work of the BCB.
On the other hand, he said that he is disappointed with the manner in which the West Berbice Cricket Association (WBCA) President runs cricket in the area adding that sponsors have lost confidence in their work because of lack of accountability.
Chowramootoo alluded to the fact that there is hardly any organized cricket competitions by the WBCA. He said that after a long while, the WBCA organised a club T20 tournament and was disappointed that clubs had to pay an entrance fee of $10,000.
To make matters worse, his team won the competition and the incentives for the final were paid by cheques, which were dishonored by the bank.
The BCB thanked Mr Chowramotoo for his confidence in the board and promised that the tournament will be smoothly run with a grand finale.
The board indicated that village cricket is very important to keep the family structure alive, improve health awareness, keep the grounds in good conditions, keep the youths away from idleness and at the same time produce cricketers for Berbice, Guyana and West Indies.
The BCB added that with the amount of cricket now played in the villages there is a rise in the interest-level for the sport. The BCB added that the board is committed to the development of the game of cricket at all levels and this competition follows similar ones in the Lower Corentyne area (Raffik and Sons Construction Services) and East Bank/New Amsterdam/No 19/East Canje Area (Ramnarine Appiah Memorial).
The board boasted of the long list of sponsors that have already this year indicated their interest in Berbice Cricket. Sponsors so far are A Ally and Sons Secondary Schools Under-17, Dalchand Rambharose Secondary Schools Under-15, The New Building Society Limited Second Division, Hand-in-Hand Second Division, Raffik and Sons, Ramnarine Appiah Memorial and Berbice Bridge Company.
The board has expressed its gratitude to all those that contributed to the success of the Berbice Board.
