Appeal for corporate support
President of the Alpha Football Club, Odinga Lumumba, his Vice President, Steve Ninvalle and coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover are very upbeat of the team’s chances as it prepares for national duty in the imminent Caribbean
Football Union (CFU) Club Champion League tournament and are currently putting the modalities in place to augment the team’s chances. This much was revealed to the media when the trio hosted a press conference at the Waterchris Hotel, Waterloo Street yesterday morning.
Placed in Group One among Trinidadian Central FC and Surinamese side, Inter Moengotapoe, the squad will open its campaign with two matches at the National Stadium, Providence. The first is slated for April 15 against the Surinamese, while the second encounter will be played at the same venue against Trinidad and Tobago four days after the first. Both encounters commence at 16:00hrs.
Mr. Lumumba revealed that the cost of preparing the team is somewhat prohibitive and is pleading with the corporate community to help defray the costs. “We are required to find some 10 million dollars if the team is to compete,” informed the Alpha top man. He said that CONCACAF has committed to offset the expense by 3 million dollars and he will be grateful for any contribution from the business community. “This is almost a ritual where we continue to agitate for support and while the response continues to be lukewarm we will continue to agitate in the hope that some (conscientious) business person will hear our voice,” pronounced Lumumba.
Mr. Dover supported Lumumba’s call and implored the intervention of the corporate community. He said that he is not privy to information of the current Suriname squad but is confident that his boys could mesh up. Dover said that Alpha has faced Suriname on three previous occasions but is cognizant of the possible changes and advancements. “We will approach the game with the same level of seriousness as before,” he assured. He also said that his boys had defeated the Trinidadians in the past and were keen on replicating the feat.
Considered Guyana’s leading Club team, Alpha United has been selected by the Caribbean Football Union as one of four clubs that will host preliminary round (group) matches in the 2015 CFU Club Championship, which is the official qualifying tournament for the 2015/2016 CONCACAF Champions League. They will be joined by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) which has been drawn in Group 2.
