Administrative Secretary of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA),
GOA’s Charles Corbin (left), Garfield Wiltshire, Ivor O’Brien and Noel Adonis (in that order, right) among others, including brother, Anthony Blackmore, bear the casket, including the body of the late Shanomae Blackmore yesterday on the way to burial in the St. James-the-Less Parish Cemetery.
Shanomae Blackmore was laid to rest yesterday afternoon following a moving ceremony at a filled to capacity St. James-the Less Parish, David Street, Kitty.
Blackmore passed away suddenly on March 18 following a brief illness. She was 34. At the time of her death, she was also Secretary of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic.
Apart from her sterling contributions to sports, Blackmore also made significant contributions to civil society groups, organisations and church. Hundreds from all walks of life flocked the Sandy Funeral Home first then the Church for the Funeral Service.
There was more than an hour and half of tributes at the Church from many distinguished persons and Organisations. Formerly on the progamme, GOA Secretary General, Ivor O’Brien, extended an appreciation for the contributions of Blackmore.
According to O’Brien, Blackmore was an invaluable asset to sport. “We at GOA will continue to miss Shanomae for the warmth and professionalism she displayed,” O’Brien said as many visibly fought to hold back tears in the congregation.
The late Blackmore’s brother, Anthony Blackmore, read the Eulogy cracking up in parts before a stirring Sermon from Reverend Canon, Evan Semple. Anthony informed his congregation among other things that his sister always had a passion for sports.
“From a very young age, Shanomae developed a passion for sports. She was a member of Rising Star Athletics Club under Coach, Cornel Rose. She was also an official, where she worked in all events and could have quoted the IAAF Rules for each,” Anthony expounded.
Reverend Semple called on all to remember Blackmore as if she was alive since in her life it was obvious that she made significant contributions to many sections of society. In an emotional and well articulated message, the reverend indicated that Blackmore’s life was lived in contrast to the unfaithful. She, he said, was a believer and servant of God.
