The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has cleared a senior official attached to its Loss Reduction office in Berbice of allegations of being involved in an extortion scheme.
Previously, it was alleged that the official had taken a bribe amounting to $1.1M to install a stolen 15KVA transformer at a business place in Berbice. However, documents reveal that these were not bribes since Customs and Guyana Revenue Authority documents reveal that the 15KVA transformer was purchased for $450,000 from the K&P Project Management Company. A further $300, 000 was paid for capital works to be done through GPL. In addition, almost $400,000 was also charged to offset other expenses associated with the execution of capital works to accommodate the power supply to the business spot at Johanna, South Black Bush Polder.
The senior Loss Reduction Officer in Berbice was cleared of allegations made against him, since there was no conflict of interest with him outsourcing his skills privately as a licenced electrical engineer.
GPL investigations further reveal that the allegations made against the Senior Loss Reduction Manager stemmed from an internal dispute, in which a Loss Reduction Supervisor was caught stealing electricity and was eventually investigated and recommended for dismissal.
However, the supervisor’s service was not terminated but his contract was not renewed last year, which caused the allegation to be made against the Senior Loss Reeducation Manager who had agreed that the supervisor be fired.
“The Loss Reduction supervisor was caught stealing electricity from a straight feed which bypassed the meter and resulting in the supervisor receiving free power at his residence. He was penalized and back-billed for two years and his contract was eventually not renewed,” a senior GPL official disclosed.
“Investigations revealed that the senior loss reduction manager did not steal any transformer and did not take any bribe as was alleged. When we really get to the bottom of it there was a vendetta, and that was the initiation of the allegations.”
It was also disclosed that the fired supervisor also has a relative and a girlfriend who hold senior positions at GPL.
