Police are investigating a brazen robbery last Friday, in which a businessman from Soesdyke was robbed in the compound of a commercial bank at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
A taxi has been seized and three men are in custody, according to police sources.
The businessman had, according to information, gone to the bank, and withdrew $1.6M.
However, on exiting the bank, he was accosted by a gunman who took away the bag containing the money.
The robber reportedly quickly left the bank’s compound and entered a car that was parked across the road in front of the East Demerara Regional Hospital.
Police sources said that investigators, working on the number plate of the getaway car, later held the owner.
The suspect reportedly claimed that he was hired by two men to go to the hospital at Diamond.
Two other men have been held.
The car, a Toyota Spacio PRR 3450, had been seized by police.
However, the monies have not been recovered.
There have been increasing incidents of citizens being tracked and robbed, sometimes killed, after cash transactions at commercial banks.
