afternoon of entertainment as the Lions Club of D’Urban Park held an annual service event to coincide with the death anniversary of former member, Deborah Backer.
According to Zaleena Lawrie, current President of the club, the event catered to approximately 136 seniors from 10 homes and churches in Guyana.
She said too, that the day was a special one because it was the death anniversary of Deborah Backer. “It’s a little melancholy and happy at the same time,” Lawrie pointed out.
The elderly men and women were treated to karaoke, dancing, and a special meal as the activities began early Saturday afternoon.
“It’s one of our signature projects when we first started 21 years ago,” Lawrie explained. She added that the event started small but grew over the years.
Mavis Duke, 74, of Dartmouth Essequibo told this newspaper that the event was an enjoyable one. With a smile, Duke said that it was her first time attending a Lions Club event in Georgetown. She added that she would often attend the meetings in her hometown.
“I’m just really enjoying this so far,” Duke said.
She went on to say that she had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get up and
dance even though she was not feeling well.
Patricia Gray, Chairperson for Health and Service, said the event was an opportunity for seniors to come out and meet with peers. She said too, that these persons are often kept inside and locked away from the rest of the world.
Gray further said that the event was held each year in the second part of the year as a way of showing appreciation outside of the Christmas season. Currently, other activities are being planned for the rest of the year. Gray said these activities will include fundraisers and other service projects.
Deborah Backer had been an active member of the Lions Club until her passing last year March.
