Host Bayrock Sports Club of Linden gave their community much to cheer about
on Sunday last when they defeated Laluni by two wickets to claim the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA)/Goodwood Racing Service 40-over title.
Batting first, Laluni posted a challenging 198 all out in 38.2 overs in blazing sunshine. Opener David Francis was the mainstay of the visitors batting with an attacking 88. He was supported by Romel Kedhu with 19, Alvin Williams 17 and 44 extras.
Pacer Dillon Williams put Laluni on the back foot early, reducing them to 24-3. But Francis played with courage and added respectability to his team’s batting; he featured in a fourth wicket stand of 56 with Williams. Despite being put down on numerous occasions, Francis wasn’t afraid to play his shots. He mixed aggression with defence and clobbered eleven fours and two maximums before he was caught attempting to clear the ropes once again. Apart from Alvin Williams and Kedhu no other batsman showed fight.
Dillon Williams, who sustained an injury and was forced to leave the field after sending down eight consecutive overs, was the pick of the bowlers with 3-28. Andrew Murray snared 2-22 and Stephane Bourne 2-43.
The home team lost Devon Belle (01) and Stephan Browne (13) early on, but Lawrence Browne and Eon Reynolds added 66 for the third wicket to keep their team in the hunt. The pair rotated the strike quite nicely and was aided by some poor fielding as they steadied the chase with level-headed batting on a track which rendered assistance to the pacers.
Medium pacer Shuman then trapped them both lbw in quick succession as Laluni fought back. Reynolds stroked five fours and one six in his well-crafted 52, while Browne cracked three fours in scoring 26. Dillon Williams came in and played his shots-he struck four fours, but when he was dismissed for 23, Laluni picked up a few more scalps as the game fluctuated rapidly in its latter stages. Although encountering some nervous moments, Marlon English (11*) and Kurt Bijader (07*) saw their team home; they ended on 199-8 in 38 overs. Shuman finished with 4-26 and Alex Dundas 2-24.
Williams was given the man of the match award, while Bayrock collected a trophy and $20,000 and Laluni a trophy and $15,000.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, president of the EBDCA Anand Kalladeen congratulated both teams and urged them to take the game seriously since players are being rewarded handsomely at the higher level. First Vice President Rohan Sarjoo said he is impressed with the talent and congratulated the winners.
