A last gasp goal on the verge of the whistle to half time (45th) off the boot of Konata Manning proved to be adequate enough to earn Pele a 1 nil victory over Grove Hi-Tech when action in the 25th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football extravaganza continued at the Victoria Community Centre Ground ECD last Saturday evening. One match later, Fruta Conquerors took advantage of a lax defence to defeat Mahaica Determinators 3- 0 in the feature attraction. Odell Williams registered a brace in the 45th and 88th minutes for the ‘juicy’ team with support from Jermine Junor (90+1).

Grove Hi Tech have been creating quite a storm recently and were expected to test Pele to the hilt. The team from the East Bank Demerara lived up to those expectations in the early stages of the game when the exchanges were fast and furious. Both teams battled furiously and kept the game at a nil all stalemate for the most part of the first session. Just when it appeared as though the situation would have remained that way, Manning was gifted a pass square in front of the opposition’s goal and with only the goalie to contend with, gently tapped the ball to the right of the advancing custodian.
The game continued at a furious pace at the start of the second session and during a scrimmage, several players bundled in front of the Grove goal mouth and that goalkeeper received a kick that forced a protest from Pele’s administrative duo on the bench. The referee then stamped his authority and issued red cards to Joshua Kamal (Pele) and Orson Franscois (Grove). Pele’s woes continued shortly afterwards when DeShane Garnette inadvertently used his hands to stop the ball and received his second yellow card which represented a red.
Despite playing with 8 players and with Jamal Cozier already receiving a yellow card, Pele, on the back of staunch offensive play of Manning held its nerves to emerge victorious.
The action continues this evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground with another enticing double header; Ann’s Grove come up against Winners’ Connection just before Western Tigers square off with Hi Stars. Kick off time is 18:30hrs.
The winning team take home two million dollars donated by Mohammad’s Enterprise, while the runners up receive half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances. (Michael Benjamin)
