Director of YBG, Chris Bowman expressed his gratitude to Beharry and stressed the importance of having such tournaments. “We do this because it’s our social responsibilities, it’s about these kids, it’s about Guyana’s future and we thank Beharry for their unwavering support over the last seven years.”
YBG is slated to have its official launch of the year-long events and Regional Conference on Friday, March 27th, 2015 at 11:00hrs.
The first National School Basketball Festival was played from June 26-30, 2006 involving 18 schools in a single elimination tournament. Today the programme has grown to almost 50 teams participating first for ranking in five separate Regional (ZONE) Tournaments, in order to qualify for the National Championship. National titles are contested for under-14, 16, 19 and girls developmental.
The tournament is also used to identify players for the Junior Elite programme, which serve as a prep for selection for Inter- Guiana Games and other internationals. The National School Basketball Festival is acknowledged as the National School Basketball Championships of Guyana.
