Police had little trouble in claiming the Balram Raghubir Joint Service T20 title – they defeated arch
rivals the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) by 63 runs in the final yesterday at Eve Leary.
Led by an attacking half century from Stephan Blacks, Police posted a challenging 169 all out in 20 overs, batting first. Their bowlers then maintained a steady line and length as GDF were sent packing for 103 in 16 overs.
Medium pacer Andre O’Neil put Police on the back foot early on by removing opener Kelvin Leitch (05) with the score on 12. However Troy Benn and Brentnol Woolford repaired the early damage with a second wicket stand of 40 with level-headed batting in front of a fair size crowd. GDF bowlers kept a decent line at times, but the duo was equal to the task as they kept the score card ticking. Benn struck two fours before he was dismissed for 37, while Woolford thumped three fours and one six in scoring 25. Police then lost a few quick wickets as GDF fought back. But Blacks innings took Police to their projected total; he shared in a 47-run seven-wicket stand with Randolph Knights (11). Man of the match, Blacks provided some entertainment for the fans, hitting six fours and three sixes in a top score of 52 before he was removed by Jason Garraway in the latter stages of the innings. Garraway was the pick of the bowlers with 2-13; Paul Castello had 2-17 and Andre O Neil 2-36.
Left arm pacer Knights gave Police an early breakthrough when he had Kenrick McDonald caught for 11 with the score on 17. Isaiah Brijaddar (13) and Leon Andrew (06) kept their
team in the hunt with a second wicket partnership of 23 before Seon Daniels removed them both in quick succession to leave the Army in trouble at 41-3. Andre O Neil and Jeremiah Harris (05) shared in a fourth wicket stand of 20, but when O’Neil was caught off Rocky Hutson for 15, the batting went downhill with only Orlando Fraser provided some resistance with 20 (3×4).
Hutson claimed 3-14, while Leitch who effected the run out of Kenswall DeJonge to spark celebrations among the Police had 2-12; Daniels claimed 2-27 and Trevor Benn 1-11. Both teams received trophies.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Sports Officer of the Guyana Police Force, Tiffany Williams congratulated both teams and said she was impressed with the talent of the players and the level of discipline display by the teams.
