A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition is adamant that the assassination of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing cannot be added to the list of unsolved killings. The alliance insists that “justice must be served.”
The political force has called on the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee to leave no stone unturned in search for Crum-Ewing’s killers.
This call was made yesterday as APNU Executive Member, Basil Williams hosted APNU+AFC weekly media conference at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Williams hosted the briefing in the absence of APNU+AFC Presidential candidate, David Granger who is currently in the United States of America.
The lawyer was accompanied by his comrade, Annette Ferguson whose comments on the issue harmonized with his.
Williams, who served in the Tenth Parliament as Deputy Speaker, told the media that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C’s) tenure in Government has been characterized by hundreds of extra-judicial killings. “But, they have failed for over a decade and a half to constitute any Commission of Inquiry into those killings, including that of Satyadeow Sawh, a Government Minister.”
He then turned his attention to Courtney Crum-Ewing and said that his “execution” comes in the context of his activities against the “excesses of the Government and its officials. Williams also pointed out that Crum-Ewing showed support for the opposition in the pending elections of May 11, 2015 “and the licentiousness at Babu John.” With that being said, Williams told the media that Crum-Ewing’s death takes on the hue of a political assassination.
“The implications of his killing are manifold: his constitutional right to demonstrate peacefully; speak freely; move freely; to belong to a political party; his right to life and to the protection of the law have all been impugned by this cowardly act,” said Williams.
The politician added that “Courtney’s assassination confirms that we live in a failed and lawless country and magnifies the importance of May 11, 2015, to the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in Guyana.”
Crum-Ewing was laid to rest on Wednesday last. His funeral attracted thousands.
APNU+AFC Presidential Candidate David Granger had paid his respects to the political activist at the Heavenly Light Full Gospel Church in Albouystown. Addressing the church he said that Courtney Crum-Ewing was a “peacemaker”, “noble,” and a “martyr” who employed lawful, peaceful, public and persistent means to bring about change in Guyana. Granger said that he had met Crum-Ewing while picketing with the APNU.
“Crum-Ewing appealed to all citizens, from all walks of life, to demand decency and respect for law and order from those in high office. While he recognized the danger of opposing a “desperate and dangerous” government and the oligarchs it has nurtured, Crum-Ewing felt strongly that opposition was better than submission. Courtney Crum-Ewing “bled to death for democracy”, Granger told the congregation.
Pointing to the assassination of Crum-Ewing, Granger bemoaned the fact that the Guyana Police Force was unable to protect Guyanese citizens irrespective of the many programmes– community policing groups, neighbourhood policing schemes, citizen security programmes – executed by the Force.
