Travis Persaud led West Demerara to their third consecutive Demerara Cricket
Board (DCB) Inter-Association 50-over Under-19 title when the defeated East Coast by eight wickets in the final round at Wales yesterday.
West Demerara, who beat Georgetown and East Coast, suffered their only loss to the East Bank side but filed a protest on that result on the grounds that three over aged players were in the East Bank team.
But despite the verdict on the protest or East Bank’s thrilling one-run win over Georgetown, who were bowled out for 71 chasing 72 to win, West Demerara finished the tournament with a superior net run rate.
Led by an accomplished unbeaten 72 by 17-year-old Renaldo Renee, West Demerara reached 130-2 replying to the 129 all out made by East Coast off 49.5 overs as the team from the West side once again proved that they are the best side.
West Demerara, who under Persaud’s leadership captured the DCB U-17 titles for the past two years before being dethroned by Georgetown this year, were spearheaded by tidy spells from Nicolia Reddy (2-10), Malcolm Hubbard (2-34), Persaud (2-22) and off-spinner Richie Looknauth who sent down 10 overs, five of which were maidens and took 2-15 although his action continues to look very suspect.
Renee, reached the boundary 11 times and cleared it once from the 85 balls he faced in only the second half-century of the competition following the 94 made by Ershad Ali for East Bank against West Dem on Wednesday.
Renee shared in a 51-run stand with Mark Jeffers (12) for the first wicket and 79 with Chetnarine Pooran (29) in an unfinished third wicket partnership to see the home team to victory after off-spinner Vivian Albert (2-29) had removed Jeffers, caught and bowled and Akshaya Persaud for a duck at 52-2 but Renee, who started the run chase with 17 runs off Askay Rampersaud including two spanking cuts and a gorgeous back foot thump through the covers.
He then danced into Ramnaresh Chutura and hit him elegantly for four before using his feet nicely to Arvin Gainda to dump him over mid-wicket for a six and a four off successive balls while Pooran hastened the end by clobbering Richard Woolford for six.
Earlier, on a typical Wales track that ‘turned square’ Pacers Daniel Basdeo and Reddy reduced East Coast to 11-3 and they never recovered despite fighting knocks of 30 each from Chatura and Woolford, while tail-enders Mana (12) and Rampersaud (15) ensured their team reached the three-figure mark.
At Everest in the other game which started two hours late yesterday due to leaky covers, East Bank were bundled out for 72 off 15.5 overs in the game that was reduced to 40 overs per side with only Ryan Shun (25) and Shemroy Kendell (11) reaching double figures in sultry conditions on a spin-friendly track.
Pacer Carlton Jacques continued to enjoy a productive tournament, picking up 3-11 from five overs, while his new ball partner Renaldo Mohamed-Ali (2-40) and off-spinner Dale Mendonca (3-10) supported well.
Chasing the small target, the City side, collapsed for 72 in 28 overs despite Tevin Imlack (18) and Shaquille Moseley (11) as leg-spinner Mark Hamilton exploited the conditions to bag 4-21 while Ershad Ali (2-7) bowled their them to an exciting come-from-behind win with seven needed and the last pair at the crease.
According to the Chairman of the DCB Competitions Committee, Colin Europe the planned final for Sunday was canceled due to a lack of funds to cover the cost of the game. “I had to call the teams and inform them that the final would no longer be played,” explained Europe.
Georgetown Coach and former Guyana off-spinner Gavin Nedd said he was disappointed with the apparent level of interest shown for youth cricket and the poor quality of covers at Everest. He added that at a time when more cricket is needed at this level less cricket is actually being played.
West Demerara Assistant Coach Sudesh Persaud, who played at the first division level in 2005 & 2006 for West Demerara side McGill, agreed with Nedd, but added the time spent together as a team is one of the reasons why West Demerara is doing so well at the youth level.
“Most of the guys in this team were playing since they were under-15 players and the unity and team spirit among the team and Travis’ captaincy are key factors in our success at Under-19 and U-17 levels over the last three years.
