The eagerly awaited David De Caires/Basil Sukhram Memorial tournament (which was postponed in February) will be held today, teeing-off at 12 noon, at the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC). This Memorial tournament is one of the very significant tournaments on the Lusignan Golf Club calendar, because of the sterling contribution made by David De Caires, who served as President of the club and as Club Captain for many years, and veteran golfer Basil Sukhram.
Today’s Competition, sponsored by the LGC, will be of the Open Medal Play format. Captain Chen Deo indicates that the grounds are now in fair condition so that golfers can look forward to a good competition. Up for grabs will be the Best Gross, Nearest to the Pin, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Best Net scores.
The David-De Caires Memorial tournament, to be held annually, was inaugurated in October 2009, to honour the memory of the late David de Caires and to remind golfers of the principles of respectful expression of individual views and freedom of expression which he -founded (1986) and late Editor-in-Chief of Guyana Publications Limited, publishers of the Stabroek News – stood for and achieved.
The Memorial for legendary golfer Basil Sukhram, who coached locally and coached and played professional golfoutside of Guyana, and is father to two of Guyana’s outstanding golfers – Christine and Rishi Sukhram – began in February 2014 as a joint tournament with the David De Caires Memorial, having been sponsored individually in January 2013 by Alfred Mentore Realty and the LGC. Sukhram suffered a heart attack in 2009 after teeing off at the fifth hole at the Club. He passed out subsequently.
