– Commander Hicken
The Guyana Police Force has found no record at the Brickdam Police Station of slain political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing filing a complaint of being threatened by anyone.
This was disclosed yesterday by Divisional Commander Clifton Hicken, who also indicated that police are questioning yet another individual in connection with Crum-Ewing’s murder, which occurred over a week ago.
Commander Hicken indicated that there was “no occurrence” of any threat at the station. A source said that this could mean that while Crum-Ewing may have made a report at Brickdam, his complaint was not documented.
Relatives of the slain former army officer have stated that he was threatened twice while staging his one-man protest against Attorney General Anil Nandlall. He reportedly identified one of the individuals who made the threats, while filing a complaint at the Brickdam Police Station.
Relatives said that he also filed a complaint with a rank at the Attorney General’s office.
Yesterday, Crime Chief Leslie James told Kaieteur News that he had instructed his staff to check their records to see if there were any reports of threats made against the activist. James had also said that the Guyana Police Force will go “wherever this investigation leads” in its quest to apprehend the individuals who riddled Crum-Ewing while he was using a bullhorn in Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
Police officials have been reluctant to divulge too much about their investigation, but Commander Hicken disclosed yesterday that an individual is in custody in connection with Crum-Ewing’s murder. Two other men have since been released.
But questions have arisen as to why police have not questioned the individuals who had allegedly issued the threats.
Some homicide experts have stated that it would have been “common sense” for the investigators to not only question the individuals, but to also check on their whereabouts at the time of Crum-Ewing’s death. According to the sources, the investigators should also try to ascertain whether these persons had firearms and conduct ballistic tests. There are reports that police are preparing to question one of the individuals.
Crum-Ewing, who was laid to rest on Wednesday, was gunned down two Tuesdays ago in Third Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, reportedly while urging residents, by way of a bullhorn, to vote against the ruling party in the upcoming General and Regional Elections.
He was shot twice to the temple, once to the back of the head, and twice to the stomach. The killer used a .32 pistol and fired at such close range that gunpowder burns were left on his victim’s clothes and body.
Police had stated that Crum-Ewing was accosted by four men in a car, one of whom discharged several rounds, hitting him about his body. However, other reports suggest that there were only two men in the car that transported the shooter. A second car with another two men came up soon after. Police have also received reports that there was a brief verbal confrontation before the gunfire.
