A fundraiser for assassinated political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing will be facilitated by this publication. This decision was prompted by the bombardment of the offices of Kaieteur News’ offices, both at Saffon Street, Georgetown and New York, by concerned persons who requested that Kaieteur News facilitate a fundraiser for Crum-Ewing’s children.
The bombardment had forced publisher of this publication, Mr Glenn Lall, to earlier this week write to Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, who yesterday granted approval for the undertaking.
Crum-Ewing was brutally murdered on the evening of Tuesday March 10, 2015, as he, aided by a loud hailer, advocated for persons in the Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, area to exercise their franchise at the upcoming elections on May 11, 2015. He was shot multiple times as he stood on Third Avenue in the Diamond New Scheme.
In light of his sudden violent demise, many have been voicing their support of Crum-Ewing’s efforts with some stating their willingness to contribute financially to his children education.
Persons can contribute by submitting their donations to the offices of Kaieteur News.
The 40-year-old was a father to three – Cosia Jewani Crum-Ewing, 13; Courtene Jadonna Crum-Ewing, 12, and three-year-old Cenique Crum-Ewing.
The fundraiser will take the form of persons donating their financial support through this publication which will be detailed (name and amount) in the pages of this publication on a daily basis.
According to Lall, while this publication is willing to accept donations “we will not accept any anonymous donations. Persons wishing to donate must give their full names and the amount they are donating and this will be published for all to see.” The purpose of such information, he noted, is to ensure that there is complete transparency and accountability. Kaieteur News has in the past facilitated similar fundraising activities that were conducted in like fashion.
Crum-Ewing’s assassination sent shockwaves across the nation, with many from all facets of society expressing condemnation.
He first became well known after his many solo picketing exercises outside the Attorney General’s Carmichael Street, Georgetown office was publicised in the media.
His decision to picket was prompted by media reports of a damning conversation between a senior journalist attached to this publication and Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, during which the latter alluded to imminent danger to be meted on this publication because of its manner of reporting.
Crum-Ewing’s picket saw him, by way of placards, appealing for the Attorney General to demit office.
The Guyana Police Force claims that it is currently working tirelessly towards apprehending and bringing to justice the criminal(s) who callously forced Crum-Ewing out of physical existence in the prime of his life.
