A Kitty resident made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing his former girlfriend’s jewellery and cell phone.
Particulars of the charge stated that on March 10, at Eastern Highway, Charles Austin stole from the person of Davlin Daniels, a quantity of gold jewellery valued over $100,000 and a Samsung cell phone valued $35,000.
Austin who was unrepresented by an attorney pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The accused told the court that the items belonged to him. He explained that he bought the items for the woman when they shared a relationship.
However, he said the woman ended the relationship and he wanted to have the items back.
Police prosecutor Bharrat Mangru’s facts stated that on the day in question, Austin and Daniels had a misunderstanding, when the defendant became annoyed, rode up beside Daniels and relieved her of the articles mentioned in the charge.
Mangru objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.
The magistrate overruled the prosecution’s request and granted Austin bail to the tune of $100,000.
He will return to court on March 23.
