Virtual complainant declines to offer evidence
Jagdeo Deodat, 45, a fisherman who on two occasions back in 2004 and 2009, engaged in sex with a minor, a close relative, walked out of the Berbice High Court on Tuesday a free man. The girl now 19 decided that she does not want to continue with the matter
Deodat, of Cromarty Farm, Corentyne, was accused of committing the act between January 1 and January 31, 2004 and again between January 1 and January 31, 2009.
The matter was called before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court. State Prosecutor Judith Gildarie Mursalin called the alleged victim as the first witness to the stand, and she informed the court that she did not wish to give further evidence in the matter. She stated that she has moved on with her life, is happily married, has a child who is nine months old and is pregnant with another.
She said that she was not induced, pressured or forced to change her mind, but decided on her own free will that she does not wish to go ahead with the matter.
Justice Reynolds then directed the jury to return with a formal verdict of not guilty.
Deodat, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Raymond Ali, told the court thanks, when Justice Reynolds asked him if he had anything to say.
